When it comes to violent crimes, Texas has the unfortunate distinction of ranking very high compared to other states in the nation.
Based on statistics released by the FBI in its 2010 edition of Crime in the United States, Texas ranked second in the nation, with a total of 113,231 violent crimes. California was first with 164,133. Texas ranked second for murders, behind the District of Columbia, but topped the list for larceny with 654,626 cases.
For victims of violent crime, the trauma they experience can last long after the actual assault takes place. In these tough economic times, victims may not have sufficient financial means or health insurance to deal with their injuries or to repair or replace damaged property.
Now Texas survivors of violent crime can obtain free legal assistance and counsel through the Texas Legal Services Center (TLSC). Founded in 1977, the TLSC is a non-profit legal resource providing assistance, training, and litigation support.
Free aid to crime victims
According to TLSC Hotline Manager Paula Pierce, the TLSC provides the following kinds of services:
“They may need assistance accessing medical care,” Pierce said. “Or, a loss of income due to physical problems they experience as a result of a crime, may lead to problems with creditors.” The TLSC also offers a self-help toolkit to help unravel the mess caused by identify theft; a problem that often follows violent criminal acts.
For free legal aid, Texas violent crime victims can reach the TLSC by calling 888-343-4414 or visiting http://www.TLSC.org. The organization has a staff of over 35 members and volunteers who provide a wide range of legal support services to victims of Texas crime.
