One of the boldest taxes in Obamacare, aside from the individual mandate of course, is the excise tax on so-called “Cadillac Plans.” This tax effectively makes it illegal to buy better coverage by imposing a 40% (yes, FORTY percent!) tax on any plan with a premium in excess of what the government thinks is “fair.” America, land of the free- well, as long as you don’t have too little coverage or too much coverage.
The country was outraged when the Federal government stepped in and told us we had to purchase a product, but where is the anger over this? The mainstream media has all but ignored this tax, mainly because only the evil rich people can afford to buy such an item. But once the framework is in place to tell us how much coverage we can have, the government can slowly ratchet down the maximum coverage and ratchet up the minimum coverage until nobody has any say in their health care decisions. Sounds great, right?
This paragraph is usually where I talk about solutions, either from conservatives trying to fight for our rights or with a call to action so that we can take back our freedom. Sadly, no such solutions exist. Now that Obamacare is here to stay, we are stuck with this FORTY percent tax on non-approved products should we choose to buy them. That means if you led a successful life and want to enjoy “Cadillac” benefits such as expanded organ transplant options or more choice in terms of doctors… tough.
